Bridging Care and Community: Dr. Surles’ First Year at Sylacauga OB/GYN

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a year now since Dr. Ashley Surles came to join the family here at Sylacauga OB-GYN. In that time, our practice has gone through a lot of great experiences. We introduced SneakPeek early gender DNA testing, updated our app and kiosk check-in system, and even won two Best of the Coosa Valley awards: one for Dr. McInnis as Best Doctor and one for Best Medical Practice in the Coosa Valley.

Through it all, Dr. Surles has been a champion for her patients and an incredible addition to the Sylacauga OB-GYN team. And since it’s a new year, we thought now would be the perfect time to check in with her to see what her experience in our community has been like so far. Let’s hear from Dr. Surles as we celebrate over a year of success and growth with her at Sylacauga OB-GYN!

Meet Dr. Ashley Surles, OB-GYN

In August 2022, we had the pleasure of introducing Dr. Ashley Surles as our newest full-service OB-GYN. Dr. Surles arrived in our community along with her husband, Dr. Bret Surles of Sylacauga Pediatrics, and their rescue dogs. As fate would have it, she was recruited by our very own Dr. McInnis, whom she met and trained under during her residency at the University of Mississippi in Jackson.

Dr. McInnis saw in Dr. Surles someone who was deeply passionate about women’s healthcare. During her time here at Sylacauga OB-GYN, that has proven to be true time and time again. Whether she is helping her patients plan families, discover minimally invasive solutions to their gynecologic concerns, or simply learn more about healthy living, Dr. Surles has been a welcome addition to our team!

What Dr. Surles Loves About Being an OB-GYN in Sylacauga

We asked Dr. Surles to reflect on her first year at our practice. Here’s what she had to say about what has made her time in our community meaningful.

Developing Real Relationships with Patients

“The relationships I have established with my patients have been the most special part of being here for the past year,” Dr. Surles says. “Getting to know them and their goals for building families and health has been very rewarding.”

At Sylacauga OB-GYN, we have always prided ourselves on being small-town doctors who provide big-city care. Part of that commitment is doing exactly what Dr. Surles has done this last year—taking the time to listen to her patients and become a meaningful part of their lives.

“My patients are so kind and I really enjoy getting to know them, along with their families who sometimes also come in to see us. It’s a really neat experience getting to practice in a town where everyone has a connection.”

A Sense of Community Throughout the Coosa Valley Area

That sense of connection is easy to take for granted in a small town, but Dr. Surles truly appreciates the opportunities it gives her to help support women in every stage of their health journeys.

“I love that Sylacauga OB-GYN is a place people can always come to for help or reassurance for their health for themselves or their babies,” she says. Rather than just being another name in an appointment book, Dr. Surles’ patients feel like their concerns are truly being heard.

She is also honored “that so many patients are willing to travel to Sylacauga OB-GYN from the surrounding communities and trust us with their health. There are some great folks in these areas.” From Alexander City to Talladega, Childersburg to Birmingham, Anniston to Opelika, women come from far and wide to experience the difference that dedicated care can make.

Working with Colleagues at Sylacauga OB-GYN

We’re lucky to have members of our team like Dr. Surles who make choosing Sylacauga OB-GYN worth it for all of our patients. Dr. Rehberg, Dr. McInnis, Kyndra Wright, CRNP, Lauren Littleton, PA-C, and all our staff members work together to make this the award-winning OB-GYN practice it’s grown into today.

Dr. Surles also reflected on how much being part of a supportive team has meant to her during her first year. “My colleagues are always ready to lend a helping hand when things get busy or share an accomplishment for their fellow coworker. It’s a great group of people to interact with every day.”

When members of a women’s health clinic work well together, great things can happen. As we all look ahead to 2024, the Sylacauga OB-GYN staff will continue to innovate and seek new ways to best serve the women of the Coosa Valley Area.
